Details

Karuizawa Taliesin is a complex recreational facility located around Lake Shiozawa, combining "nature, art museum, literature" and "recreation." Among its attractions is the "Suibatsuso (Former Asabuki Mountain Villa)," which is registered as a national tangible cultural asset. This building was designed in 1931 (Showa 6) by American architect William Merrell Vories and was relocated and restored to its current site in 2008 from its original location near the Nakanoshimbashi. It is considered one of the highest quality buildings in the history of Karuizawa villa architecture and holds significant historical value. Inside, luxurious furniture and heaters used by the Asabuki family, who originally lived in this building, are displayed, showcasing the atmosphere of the time. The unique designs by Vories are also interesting, such as the staircase leading to the second floor and the terrace that passes through the restaurant. In addition, various special exhibitions featuring works by different artists, pottery exhibitions, and more are held here, so if you have the chance, be sure not to miss them (special exhibitions require an additional entrance fee).
