About Sumida Local Cultural Museum

Through rich data, fully grasp the history and culture of Sumida Ward!

Details

Sumida Ward in Tokyo has historically thrived as a transportation hub along the Sumida River, serving as the birthplace of "townspeople culture" (Edo merchants) during the Edo period. Today, Sumida Ward is widely recognized for the Tokyo Skytree, and the "Sumida Local Cultural Museum" is a facility that collects, preserves, and displays materials related to the history, traditions, and local culture of Sumida Ward. The permanent exhibition on the first floor, "The History of Sumida," introduces the history and changes of Sumida Ward from prehistoric and ancient times to the modern era through documents, paintings, and excavated artifacts. On the second floor, there is a three-dimensional model recreating the cherry blossom viewing scene from the late Meiji period. The immersive displays are not to be missed. There are also experiential paintings depicting the Tokyo air raids. Each year, multiple special exhibitions are held to introduce Sumida's historical culture, traditions, and famous attractions, and there are also planned exhibitions in the display room on the third floor. The first floor includes a reading area and a museum shop, where many books related to Sumida Ward are available for browsing.
