📝 Introduction
The guardian deity for safety at sea and during travel.
📖 Details
Sumiyoshi Shrine has long been revered by the public as a guardian deity that protects maritime safety and ensures safe travels. The "Sumiyoshi Shrine" plaque, hanging in the center above the torii gate, is a rare ceramic piece. The "water basin" used by worshippers for purification features intricate carvings depicting ships and waves, making it a must-see highlight that has been designated as a cultural heritage site. Within the shrine precinct, there are several small shrines, among which the "Ryujin Shrine," dedicated to the gods of commerce, entertainment, and scholarship, is particularly popular. During the annual festival on August 6 and the "Honmatsuri," held every three years, the entire Tsukishima area is filled with a festive and joyful atmosphere. Every spring, the shrine hosts the "Sumiyoshi Shrine Cherry Blossom Festival" when the grounds are in full bloom with Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms. During this event, the shrine treats visitors enjoying the blossoms with complimentary sweet rice wine and red bean soup with mochi.
