About Suntory Museum of Art
In a modern Japanese-style space infused with warmth, there is a collection of ancient artworks that allow one to feel the "beauty of life."
Details
The Suntory Museum of Art was established in 1961 by then-Suntory President Keizo Saji in Marunouchi, Tokyo. In 1975, it moved to the Suntory Building in Akasaka, and later in 2007, it reopened in its current location at "Tokyo Midtown," designed by architect Kengo Kuma. The building extensively uses materials such as wood and washi paper, transforming it into a Japanese-style space filled with a warm, natural atmosphere that is relaxing and tranquil. The third floor features a museum shop and a café planned by the Kanazawa tea utensil brand "Kaga Fumuroya"; the sixth floor houses the tea room "Genchoan," which was relocated from the old Suntory Museum of Art. During exhibition periods, tea ceremonies are held on designated days, allowing visitors to enjoy a moment of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Staying true to the original concept of "Beauty in Life," the museum's collection includes approximately 3,000 items, including national treasures and important cultural properties. It boasts a remarkable collection of traditional Japanese art such as paintings, ceramics, and lacquerware, as well as Western and Eastern glassware. There are no permanent exhibitions; instead, selected works are displayed in line with the themes of special exhibitions.
In 2020, the entrance underwent a complete renovation to enhance its display capabilities, creating a more attractive environment where both visitors and the museum itself can feel comfortable and at ease.
