About Suwashima Artist Village (Former Suwashima Junior High School)
Once the campus of the old Sugi Island Middle School, it is now an exhibition showcasing art created collaboratively by young artists and the island's residents.
Details
Since 2010, the "Awashima Artist Village" training project has been launched in Mitoyo City, Kagawa Prefecture, using Awashima as a stage to provide accommodation and a creative base for young artists. Starting in 2013, the Awashima Artist Village has served as accommodation, a creative base, and a venue for the Setouchi International Art Festival, showcasing the works of various artists.
Currently, it regularly exhibits works from the 2019 Setouchi International Art Festival, with a piece titled "Using Cave Paintings as Language to Tell the Story of Whales Reborn as Oxygen." This artwork was collaboratively created by Japanese artist Maki Okajima, the Indian artist Mayur Vayeda, who is an inheritor of the Warli tribal wall paintings, and the residents of Awashima.
During the visit, enthusiastic islanders actively serve as guides (free of charge), allowing visitors to learn about the little anecdotes that occurred during the creation of these artworks through conversation, providing a deeper understanding of the intrinsic charm of the pieces.
