About Suzumoto Engeijou (Suzumoto Theater)

In the 160-year history of the yose, enjoy the performances of yose entertainment.

Details

Suzumoto Engeijou is one of the traditional rakugo theaters in Tokyo, originating from a storytelling venue called "Guntai-seki Honbaku-tei," established in the 4th year of Ansei (1857) during the late Edo period. It continues to host a variety of performances, primarily rakugo, but also including manzai, kyōgen, paper cutting, magic, impersonations, kyōdōgaku, and narrative songs, among other forms of entertainment. The performance content changes every ten days, with the first to tenth days referred to as "jōseki" (upper seats), the eleventh to twentieth days as "chūseki" (middle seats), and the twenty-first to thirtieth days as "gaseki" (lower seats), while the thirty-first day features special performances such as solo shows. The venue has a seating capacity of up to 285 seats, and except for special performances, seating is generally unreserved. You can choose your preferred spot and spend half a day enjoying the traditional Japanese performing arts, primarily rakugo. Basically, you can freely enter or leave your seat as long as it is not during a performance. You can take half a day to enjoy all the performances or focus on a specific performer, with each person's experience being unique. The second floor features a dining area where you can watch live performances on a screen while enjoying your own bento, snacks, ice cream, and more.

Highlights

With a history of over 160 years, it is the oldest existing yose. The performances mainly feature rakugo, along with various other acts. In principle, tickets are sold on the day of the performance and are all unreserved seating.
