One of the three great temples of the Kanto region dedicated to Fudo Myo-o. It's said to be especially effective for traffic safety and is also the memorial temple of Hijikata Toshizo of the Shinsengumi.

📖 Details

Kōbadaishi Fudōsonzan, known as one of the "Three Great Fudō Temples of Kanto" alongside Naritasan Shinshōji, was established in the early Heian period and is the head temple of the Shingon Sect's Chizan school. Each year, it attracts around 300,000 visitors during the New Year celebrations. It is said to be particularly effective in granting blessings for traffic safety, with the "nenjitsu" or monthly special day on the 28th drawing a continuous stream of worshippers. Kōbadaishi Fudōsonzan covers a large area, with the temple grounds and the adjacent forest totaling approximately 30,000 tsubo. Various events are held throughout the year, and visitors can enjoy different natural scenery in each season, such as the Hydrangea Festival in early summer and the Autumn Leaves Festival in the fall. The temple houses around 20,000 valuable important cultural properties and temple treasures, including the "Fudō-dō," the statues of the Nio guardians on either side of the "Nio-mon" gate, and the gigantic statue known as "Jōroku Fudō Sanson," which weighs over 1,100 kilograms. Furthermore, Kōbadaishi Fudōsonzan is also the temple for Tsukama Sosuke Hijikata, the deputy commander of the Shinsengumi.
