About Textile Reference Museum - Purple

Understand and feel the history and charm of textiles through appreciation, touch, and experience.

Details

The Textile Reference Museum, known as Shishi, is a facility that offers tours and hands-on activities, operated by Morishige Textile Co., Ltd., which was established in 1878. The museum showcases over 1,200 valuable materials related to the history and culture of Japanese textiles. Until around 1975, the building of the "Textile Reference Museum, Shishi" was used as a factory for producing Kiryu textiles and was designated as a National Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2006. Kiryu textiles have a history of over 1,000 years and are one of the famous specialties of Kiryu City, designated as a "Traditional Craft" in 1977. Their characteristics include a soft texture and rich luster, and they are used in a wide range of applications. They can be made into high-end kimonos as well as ties, shawls, and other garments. The building, which still retains the old factory appearance, holds significant historical value. Before entering the museum, take a moment to notice the serrated roof. This jagged building preserves the old style from when it was constructed and is one of the representative buildings of Kiryu City. The museum's hall displays various hand-operated weaving machines, which are definitely worth seeing. Additionally, there are many exhibits of weaving tools and machines from ancient times to the present. Notably, the giant loom, measuring 3.2 meters in width, 5.5 meters in length, and 2 meters in height, is particularly eye-catching. It is the largest hand-operated loom among the traditional looms still existing in Japan. Having the chance to see these rare weaving machines up close is truly a unique opportunity. During the weaving experience, experienced instructors will guide you, so beginners can feel confident trying it out. Visitors can freely experience the actual operation of weaving on any loom in the exhibition hall; just let the staff know if you wish to try. However, if you want to make textile items like coasters, prior reservation is required. Different items will have different pricing, so please confirm the costs when making your reservation. The museum also offers indigo dyeing experiences, which interested friends should definitely challenge themselves to (also requires prior reservation). The indigo dyeing experience is very popular! You can experience the process of dyeing fabric with various unique patterns. Additionally, the Morishige Textile factory is located within the facility, where you can observe the process of modern weaving machines automatically weaving. The museum shop sells a variety of Kiryu textiles, so be sure to purchase some as souvenirs of your trip!
