About The Grasslands of Chisenri
The lush green grasslands allow one to empty their thoughts and become immersed in a tranquil and beautiful world.
Details
Kusasenrigahama is a vast green grassland located at the northern foot of Eboshidake, one of the main peaks of the Aso mountain range known as "Aso Gokai." The pastoral scenery and atmosphere have been celebrated by many waka poets throughout history and have been included in textbooks. When people mention "Aso," they immediately think of this expansive Kusasenrigahama.
Situated at an altitude of 1,140 meters, Kusasenrigahama is a double caldera remnant formed approximately 30,000 years ago. The sprawling grassland, extending about 1 kilometer, features two ponds created by the accumulation of water in the double caldera. Against the backdrop of smoke rising from Nakadake, herds of horses quietly graze on the seemingly endless grassland, creating a serene pastoral scene that is truly refreshing. In fact, this seemingly natural grassland landscape is maintained through annual burning activities, making Kusasenrigahama a masterpiece of collaboration between humans and nature.
Near the parking lot, there is the Aso Volcano Museum, where visitors can learn about Aso's nature, origins, and evolution, as well as observe volcanic activity through cameras set up in the caldera. Additionally, activities such as horseback riding experiences are available, offering particularly beautiful views from atop a horse.
Highlights
The vast grasslands are one of the representative landscapes of Aso. You can experience horseback riding (for a fee). At the Aso Volcano Museum, you can learn about Mount Aso. You can enjoy Aso's local delicacies, such as "Akaushi Gyudon" (beef bowl with red beef), at the nearby scenic restaurant "Shin Kusasenri." Not only is the lush green summer beautiful, but the silver world covered in ice and snow during winter is also worth seeing.
