About The Way of Philosophy
A walking trail of about 2 kilometers from Ginkaku-ji to Kumano Wakamiya Jinja.
Details
The Philosopher's Path is a riverside walkway near Kyoto University, stretching from the famous sightseeing spot "Ginkaku-ji" to "Kumano Wakamiya Shrine," with a total length of 2 kilometers. It is named after the early 20th-century Japanese philosopher and Kyoto University professor Nishida Kitaro, who would walk here every morning to meditate. In 1987, it was selected as one of the "One Hundred Famous Roads in Japan."
The vibrant scenery, such as hydrangeas in early summer and autumn leaves, leaves a deep impression with its rich seasonal charm. It is particularly famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot recognized throughout Japan. From late March to early April each year, around 400 cherry trees bloom along the canal, primarily featuring Somei Yoshino, as well as Oshima cherry, Yaezakura, and Shidarezakura. It is one of the top cherry blossom viewing locations in Kyoto. When in full bloom, it creates a beautiful cherry blossom tunnel that captivates all visitors.
