🗺️ Tie Lun Hot Spring

📝 Introduction

The steam rises gently, making it a representative hot spring town of Beppu's original scenery.

📖 Details

Tetsuwan Onsen is located on a high plateau about 30 minutes by bus from Beppu City and is a representative hot spring destination among the Beppu Eight Hot Springs. Most of Beppu's hot spring outlets are concentrated in the Tetsuwan area, where the sight of steam rising from the hot spring street is quite dreamlike. It has been selected as an important cultural landscape of Japan, known as "Beppu's steam and hot spring landscape." At the same time, it serves as a major hub for the classic Beppu sightseeing itinerary, the "Jigoku Meguri" (Hell Tour). Tetsuwan Onsen has a long history, beginning with the "Jōyū" (steam bath) created by the famous monk "Ippen Shōnin" during the Kamakura period. Ippen Shōnin was the first to use the frighteningly high-temperature steam that looked like "hell" for health benefits. Within the "Jōyū Plaza," built on the site of the "Jōyū," there is a statue of "Ippen Shōnin." Since its opening, the hot spring has developed as a therapeutic hot spring resort and has now become a representative tourist destination for Ōita. It still retains the unique charm of the past hot spring town and offers many self-catering hot spring inns suitable for long stays. The hot spring town is centered around the main street "ideyu-zaka" (Japanese: いでゆ坂) and has nine public baths scattered throughout. Among them, "Tetsuwan Jōyū" is the origin of Tetsuwan Onsen. Here, visitors can experience the Japanese-style steam bath "Jōyū," which is covered with sweet flag herbs. One of the specialty dishes of Tetsuwan Onsen is "Jigoku Mushi," which involves steaming vegetables, meat, and fish using the hot spring steam. Originally, "Jigoku Mushi" was a dish prepared by hot spring guests for self-catering, but in recent years, it has gained attention as a local specialty. Visitors can experience making and tasting "Jigoku Mushi" dishes at the "Jigoku Mushi Workshop Tetsuwan."
