About Tonohetsuri (塔崖)
The continuous and perilous cliffs are a natural monument of the country.
Details
For one million years, the area has undergone continuous erosion and weathering, forming a landscape of spectacular rock formations. "Tonohetsuri" in the local dialect means "cliff fracture" or "precipitous cliff." The magnificent sight of large columnar cliffs stretches 200 meters long and is recognized as a rare case of erosion topography, designated as a national natural monument in 1943.
The large cliffs are named based on their shapes, including "Eboshiyama" (烏帽子岩), "Kuruwatari" (九輪塔岩), "Byoubu" (屏風岩), "Shishitō" (獅子塔岩), and "Gomadō" (護摩塔岩). Imagining the names based on the unique shapes of each cliff adds an interesting perspective. Walking across the suspension bridge above the Agagawa River, which creates the breathtaking tower cliffs, one can see the grand landscape shaped by nature's artistry. The surrounding area is densely forested, making the seasons of new greenery and autumn leaves even more beautiful. The winter scenery, blanketed in soft white snow, is particularly enchanting (the suspension bridge is closed in winter).
The tower cliffs are only a 5-minute walk from the nearest station, making transportation convenient. There are several restaurants and souvenir shops, which are crowded with tourists during the peak seasons of spring and autumn.
