📖 Details

In the Kiryu area, there is a custom known as the "Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage." According to legend, if one sincerely worships the "Seven Lucky Gods," they can ward off disasters and gain happiness and good fortune. The pilgrimage route starts at "Koumyouji (Benzaiten)," located north of Kiryu Station, and then proceeds to the following temples in order: "Myouinji (Jurojin)," "Hokyouji (Daikokuten)," "Seirensuji (Fukujuroku)," "Kyushouji (Ebessan)," "Housenji (Bishamonten)," and "Seihouji (Hoteison)." The belief in the Seven Lucky Gods originated in the late Muromachi period (1336–1573) and developed among farmers and fishermen. In 1989, the late renowned collector Mr. Kawamoto Genji initiated the "Kiryu Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage Kenwa Association," which helped popularize this custom. For over 30 years, the Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage has become a beloved worship activity among the local community in Kiryu. Surrounded by abundant nature, Housenji stands tall amidst ancient trees and greenery. The pilgrimage route stretches approximately 7.5 kilometers, allowing participants not only to worship the seven deities but also to enjoy the natural scenery and historical architecture of Kiryu along the way. It is also a very suitable trail for hiking. Among the continuous flow of worshippers, there are not only local residents but also many visitors who come specifically to participate in the pilgrimage. In just two hours, one can worship the seven deities while also getting a workout, making it a truly appealing itinerary. The most notable deity at Housenji is Bishamonten, who is worshipped for family safety and military success. Housenji was established in 1574 and is the sixth temple in the Kiryu Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage. It is said that the pagoda held by Bishamonten can bestow unlimited wealth upon people. Furthermore, Bishamonten is also known as the god of knowledge who is well-versed in Buddhist teachings and possesses divine power as a martial god to protect the area. For a long time, Bishamonten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, has been worshipped by many believers for wealth, good fortune, exorcism of evil, and academic success. Additionally, during the pilgrimage, one can explore many historical sites and important landmarks in Kiryu City, including the tomb of the Kiryu castle lord, Yori Nari, which is designated as a historic site. Other important cultural heritage sites in Kiryu include the main hall, the mountain gate, and the rotating sutra. Completing the Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage and collecting "Goshuin" as a memento of the worship. The journey through the temples filled with natural scenery allows one to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax in a peaceful and solemn atmosphere! It is recommended to participate in the Kiryu Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage tour, allowing the seven deities representing different fortunes to bless you by warding off seven types of disasters and granting seven kinds of happiness.
