About Tōryū Tenmangū

The legendary guardian deity of Tōryū that brings various good fortune to the people.

Details

Kiryū Tenmangū is a shrine that was established as a branch of the Kitano Tenmangū in Kyoto. As one of the five major Tenjin shrines in the Kanto region, it has long been revered as the guardian shrine of Kiryū. The shrine has a long history; according to the shrine's records, it was built between 71 and 130 AD to worship the deity Tenko Hi no Mikoto, and during the early Nanboku-chō period, it became a Tenmangū dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. The approach to the shrine leads to the main hall, which faces the shrine's main gate. This main hall was completed in 1793 and features a "Gongen-zukuri" architectural style that connects the main hall, the offering hall, and the worship hall. The main hall and the offering hall are built on a massive rock known as "Tengami no Iwa" (the Rock of the Heavenly Deity), which is considered an energy spot of the shrine. The outer walls of the hall are adorned with exquisite and ornate carvings. Due to its advanced architectural techniques of the time, it has been designated as an important cultural property of Gunma Prefecture and is definitely worth a visit. Additionally, when paying respects, do not forget to admire the back of the building. In front of the main hall stands a statue of "Kiryū," which is said to be the origin of the name "Kiryū." When people mention Tenmangū shrines in Japan, those familiar with Japan might think of shrines dedicated to the "God of Learning." However, Kiryū Tenmangū is somewhat different. Kiryū, known for its beautiful mountains and clear waters since ancient times, is considered an ideal feng shui location by geomancers. The placement of the deity's statue in the main hall follows feng shui principles: the east is represented by the Blue Dragon, the west by the White Tiger, the south by the Vermilion Bird, and the north by the Black Tortoise, aiming to absorb the energy of heaven and earth, bringing prosperity in business, family safety, health, good fortune, and protection from calamities to the worshippers. Therefore, Kiryū Tenmangū is deeply respected by the public, and there are always many visitors. After strolling through Kiryū's old streets, be sure to visit Kiryū Tenmangū. Another highlight of Kiryū Tenmangū is the antique market held on the first Saturday of each month within the shrine grounds. This antique market is renowned alongside the Tōkyō Tōgō Shrine and the Kawagoe Antique Market, being one of the three major antique markets in the Kanto region. The market is always bustling, with over 80 shops from across the country bringing a variety of goods. Items include daily necessities, old books, ceramics, prints, kimonos, and swords. Antique lovers should come here to hunt for treasures.
