About Tsunoshima Coast
A beautiful coastline where you can encounter a variety of natural landscapes.
Details
Tsunoshita Coast is located within the Sanriku Reconstruction National Park and is designated as a national scenic spot with beautiful coastlines. It features a diverse range of natural beauty, including rich seasonal flowers, fresh natural grasslands, a coastline dotted with strange rocks, pine forests over a hundred years old, and charming black-tailed gulls.
The coastline stretches approximately 12 kilometers facing the Pacific Ocean and can be roughly divided into four areas. The northernmost area is "Awashima." As the name suggests, this area was originally an island but is now connected to the mainland. It is famous as a breeding ground for black-tailed gulls, which come in large numbers from March to August, allowing visitors to see them raising their chicks. At the top of Awashima is "Awashima Shrine," which enshrines Benzaiten, the deity of commerce and fishing, and is deeply revered by the local community.
Next is the "Ashiomizaki Observatory" area, characterized by its Western-style castle features, which connects to "Osuka Coast," known for its singing sands. Further south is the representative tourist spot of Tsunoshita Coast, the "Tsunoshita Natural Grassland" area. The highlight of the southernmost area, "Okuki," includes the "Seaside Hut," which evokes memories of the old fishermen's lives, and "Itsukushima Shrine (Benten Island)."
Additionally, there is a budget bus service called "Black-tailed Gull," which operates in the area. If you want to explore various places in a short time, it’s worth checking out.
