About Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse

A historical site where one can encounter the charm of the Meiji to Showa eras, filled with a nostalgic atmosphere.

Details

From the Meiji era to the Showa era, Tsuruga thrived as an international city connecting Russia to the European continent, with the Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse serving as a symbolic building of the area. It later transitioned to uses such as a military supplies warehouse and a kelp storage facility, making it one of the few red brick buildings in Fukui Prefecture. In 2009, the north wing, south wing, and red brick walls were registered as national tangible cultural properties. In 2015, the "Tsuruga Red Brick Warehouse" was renovated and reopened as a three-dimensional model museum and restaurant. The north wing's "Three-Dimensional Model Museum" features a complete reproduction of the streetscape from the peak period of the port town, spanning from the late Meiji to early Showa periods. The south wing's "Restaurant Hall" allows guests to enjoy meals within the red brick building's space. The largest "Railway and Port Three-Dimensional Model" in Japan boasts an impressive scale of 27.6 meters in length and 7.5 meters in depth. Based on restoration maps, the streets of Tsuruga from the late Meiji to early Showa periods have been recreated at a scale of approximately 1:80. Notably, every hour on the hour and half-hour, a 15-minute three-dimensional model show and short film are played, featuring moving three-dimensional models, railway models, and buses in sync with the film. During the film, the sky and streetlights also change accordingly. Additionally, there is an area in the three-dimensional model where visitors can experience viewing from angles not visible from the front.

Highlights

The 3D Model Museum features nostalgic street scene models, which are a must-see attraction. There is also a gift shop selling original merchandise and railway-themed items. The restaurant area offers a variety of meals, from takeout snacks to seafood dishes, with a total of three restaurants available.
