🗺️ Twelve Lakes (Aoiike)

📝 Introduction

Famous for the mysterious blue glow of "Aoiike," it is a group of lakes located in the World Heritage site of Shirakami-Sanchi.

📖 Details

Registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the "Shirakami-Sanchi" features a group of 33 lakes nestled within its beech forests in the western region. These lakes were formed by landslides caused by a major earthquake in April 1704. From the mountains above, only 12 lakes are visible, which is why it is named "Twelve Lakes." Among the various lakes, the "Aoi-ike" (青池) is a must-see, presenting a mysterious hue reminiscent of blue ink. The water is crystal clear, allowing visibility of the beech tree stumps submerged at the bottom, and the lake's surface sparkles with a cobalt blue, creating a captivating scene. The forests of the Twelve Lakes have been proven to have relaxing and therapeutic effects, featuring four certified healing trails suitable for forest therapy. The "Nihon Gorge" (日本峡谷), with its white rock walls contrasting against the lush green trees, is home to the tea house "Juuni-koan" (十二湖庵), where visitors can enjoy fine tea brewed with "Furu-kubo-ike" (沸壺池) spring water. There are many attractions worth visiting, making it a great place to enjoy a forest bath. The Twelve Lakes area is open for individual entry from April to November. Visitors can experience a variety of seasonal landscapes, from fresh green vistas to mountains blanketed in fiery red autumn leaves. Guided tours are available from December to March, allowing access even during the snowy season.
