🗺️ Ueno Zoo (上野動物園)

📝 Introduction

A historic zoo with super popular and cute pandas!

📖 Details

Opened in 1882, it is Japan's first zoo. Although located in the city center of Tokyo, it retains a natural atmosphere as an urban zoo and is home to about 300 species and 3,000 animals. The zoo is divided into two major areas: the East Zoo and the West Zoo. In the West Zoo, the "Panda Forest" offers two locations to view the popular giant pandas. Upon entering through the main entrance, visitors will first reach the East Zoo. On the left side is the "Japanese Animal Area," which features the five-story pagoda designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Here, you can also see native Japanese animals such as the Ezo deer and the Japanese serow, as well as elephants, bears, and tigers. In addition to the "Panda Forest," the West Zoo is home to animals like the stork known for hardly moving, the whale-headed stork, and the ring-tailed lemur. Moreover, from late July to early August each year, various bird species can be seen in the lotus-filled unin-ike pond. The "Children's Zoo STEP" showcases small animals and poultry raised within the zoo, allowing for close-up interactions with the animals.
