About Unzen Fugendake (Unzen Fugen Mountain)
New mountains formed by solidified lava and breathtaking landscapes await every visiting traveler.
Details
Located in the central part of the Shimabara Peninsula, this active volcano experienced a major eruption in 1990. After about 20 years, it was finally declared dormant and has now become a popular destination for hikers and tourists year-round. The hike begins from the "Ikinohara Park" parking lot at the base of the mountain, and it is recommended to follow the designated trail. It takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach the endpoint of the hike, making it an easy trek even for beginners, which has garnered positive reviews.
The cable car station is located next to the "Nita Pass" parking lot. From the summit at an elevation of 1,359 meters, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the Ariake Sea and the Amakusa Islands, as well as a panoramic view of Kirishima. The impressive Heisei Shinzan, formed by solidified lava from eruptions, can also be seen. In spring, there are three-leaved azaleas; in summer, there are four-star flowers; in autumn, the leaves turn red; and in winter, frost flowers appear, showcasing a variety of beautiful floral scenery that changes with the seasons.
When hiking, in addition to wearing hiking shoes and carrying a raincoat as standard gear, it is advisable to prepare trekking poles for use on the more challenging sections of the trail.
