About Verny Park (維爾尼公園)
Enjoy a stroll by the seaside, admire the charming roses, and learn about the history of Yokosuka in the park.
Details
Verny Park (維爾尼公園) is a park that offers stunning views of Yokosuka Harbor. The park is named after the French engineer Verny, who made significant contributions during the construction of the old Yokosuka Iron Works across the bay. The park features a geometric-style French garden that perfectly complements the atmosphere of the port town of Yokosuka.
The wooden boardwalk, where visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll in the sea breeze, is part of the "Sea Breeze Road," a 10-kilometer path leading from JR Yokosuka Station to Cape Kannon. The flower beds are home to approximately 130 varieties of 1,300 rose bushes, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant blooms and elegant fragrances during the spring and autumn seasons. During the blooming season, a "Rose Carnival" is held, featuring food trucks, market music performances, and a variety of exciting activities.
Additionally, facilities such as the "Verny Memorial Museum," which showcases Verny's achievements, and the "Yokosuka Modern Heritage Museum THIBAUDIER Residence," which relocated and reconstructed the oldest Western-style building in Honshu, are both free to visit. There are also the main gun of the battleship "Mutsu," the guardhouse, and several monuments in Yokosuka, all of which allow visitors to experience the history of this military port.
