About WAPPA BUILDING
A cultural facility centered around the traditional craft item "曲輪盒 (Kyokubako, bento box)."
Details
The traditional craft of Odate, "Odate Magemono" (大館曲げわっぱ), involves boiling Akita cedar straight-grain wood in water at around 80 degrees to soften it, allowing it to be bent into shape. During the Edo period, it was widely used as a side business for samurai and served as a bento box or rice container. Its natural tones, lightweight durability, and ability to absorb moisture without damaging the ingredients have made it increasingly appreciated in recent years.
WAPPA BUILDING (わっぱビルヂング) is centered around the concept of the Magemono and opened in 2018 as a place for "tradition" × "food" × "exchange." On the first floor, the "Shibata Yoshinobu Store" gallery & shop showcases a variety of Magemono products, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty and functionality of these items once again. A corner of the gallery features a museum that collects Magemono from around the world, and visitors can also experience making their own Magemono (reservation required).
Next to it, there is a café where you can enjoy tiramisu served in a Magemono, while the second floor houses shared offices and co-working spaces.
Highlights
The excellent moisture regulation and antibacterial effects make the Kyokubako the best container for enjoying meals. Reservations can be made in advance to experience making a Kyokubako. A variety of Kyokubako products are available for sale in the store.
