About West Park
Located in the city yet surrounded by rich greenery, it is a scenic spot with breathtaking views.
Details
"Nishi Park" is located in the center of Fukuoka City, covering an area of 170,000 square meters. The park retains natural forests of pine, oak, and camphor trees, allowing visitors to enjoy leisurely walks surrounded by lush greenery, even in the urban environment. The area was originally known as a scenic spot famous for its sacred mountain and is also the site of Kōun Shrine. Today, it features stone monuments such as poetry stones and song stones, as well as statues of local great figures, exuding a romantic atmosphere steeped in history.
In its early days, it was called "Aratsuyama," situated on a small hill with excellent views. From the observation deck, one can gaze eastward at the cityscape of Fukuoka, and to the north, the distant sights of Hakata Bay, Uminonakamichi, and Shika Island. In spring, cherry blossoms and azaleas bloom, while in autumn, the red-tinted forests narrate the changing of the seasons. Nishi Park has been selected as one of the "Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan," and during spring, around 1,300 cherry trees bloom spectacularly, making it a truly enchanting sight. During the cherry blossom season, nighttime illuminations attract many visitors who come to enjoy the flowers.
