About Yamagata Zao Onsen Ski Resort
A vast ski resort with beautiful ice trees and hot springs.
Details
With 26 ski trails and 34 lifts, it is the largest ski resort in the country. Utilizing complex terrain, it has created a vast ski area composed of six major zones, offering a variety of trails from beginner to advanced levels. Renowned for its excellent snow quality, skiers and snowboarders from across the nation travel great distances for its fluffy powder snow.
The biggest highlight is the uppermost tree ice trails, famous worldwide for their artistic tree ice formations. The breathtaking views of the Zao mountain range and the majestic tree ice created by nature are truly awe-inspiring. To accommodate tourists coming to enjoy such stunning scenery, routes for non-skiing visitors have been established.
Additionally, located at the center of the expansive ski resort is the Zao Onsen, which is said to have been established over 1,900 years ago. It is the premier hot spring in the Tohoku region and was bustling during the Edo period as the western trailhead to Zao Gongen. The spring water is a strong acidic sulfuric mineral spring known for its skin-beautifying effects. Not only can overnight guests enjoy it, but day visitors can also use the hot spring facilities.
