About Yame Traditional Crafts Museum
The diverse traditional crafts of the Yame region come together in one place.
Details
This facility gathers traditional crafts from the Yame region in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture, aiming to inherit traditional techniques and develop local industries. It showcases various crafts that have been passed down in the Yame area since ancient times, including Yame Fukushima altars, Yame lanterns, Yame hand-made paper, Yame stone lanterns, and Kurume kasuri. There is also a souvenir shop inside where visitors can enjoy shopping.
The building itself is designed based on the white-walled warehouse streets of Yame Fukushima and is constructed on the former site of the old Chikugo-Fukushima Station of the former national railway. Notably, remnants of the railway tracks run through the lobby.
Additionally, there is the oldest history and tradition of hand-made paper in Kyushu, known as Yame hand-made paper. In the attached "Hand-Made Paper Museum," visitors can participate in experiences to create postcards, bookmarks, and round fans using hand-made paper (for a fee).
Furthermore, the adjacent "Yame Folk Museum" displays the folklore and traditional culture of the Yame region. Nearby, there is the "Tourism Product Hall TOKIMEKI," which sells a variety of local specialties, including the nationally renowned Yame tea, local sake, famous sweets, and processed agricultural products.
