About Yashima
The island, shaped like a roof, is famous as the ancient battlefield of the renowned Genpei War.
Details
Yashima, located in the northeastern part of Takamatsu City, is part of Setonaikai National Park and is designated as a national historic site and natural monument. The island is covered by flat-lying rocks known as "Mesa," with steep cliffs surrounding some areas, giving it a tabletop-like appearance that resembles a giant roof from a distance, hence the name "Yashima." It is quite famous as an ancient battlefield of the "Genpei War" (1180-1185) in Japanese history.
The highest point of Yashima is approximately 300 meters above sea level, extending about 5 kilometers north to south and about 2 kilometers east to west. Several observation decks have been built at the summit, offering views of the cityscape of Takamatsu and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, earning it the title of "the best scenic spot in the Seto Inland Sea." The scenery visible from here has been selected as one of the "One Hundred Best Sunsets in Japan," "One Hundred Best Night Views in Japan," and "One Hundred Famous Moons in Japan." From the "Dango Ridge Observation Deck," one can also see the entire battlefield of Dan-no-ura, the main site of the Genpei War. Additionally, there are tourist attractions such as Yashima Temple and an aquarium at the summit.
