About Yōkōkan Garden
Originally known as "Gyozensui Yashiki," it is a famous garden where the house and pond seem to be one.
Details
The Yōkōkan Garden is located along the outer moat north of Fukui Castle and represents a water garden from the early to mid-Edo period. This garden served as a villa for the Matsudaira family, the feudal lords of Fukui at the time, and the residence standing on the lake appears to float lightly on the water, earning it the name "Gosen Mizuyashiki." Here, visitors can enjoy the same leisurely view of the garden from the tatami room as the feudal lord of Fukui once did.
The garden is designed as a strolling-style landscape garden with a sukiya-style house, featuring a pond without an island and buildings that are very close to the water's surface. The pond occupies most of the central area of the garden, and the surroundings are specially designed to allow visitors to enjoy different views as they walk.
The residence next to the large pond in front of the tatami room consists of six tatami rooms, including the Gozashitsu and the Gotsukimi-shitsu, along with a kitchen and a bathhouse. The ceiling reflects shimmering waves from the water's surface, and elements like flower motifs and windows showcase the unique beauty of Japan throughout the space.
In the Gotsukimi-shitsu, designed as a tea room, visitors can experience the tea ceremony and sencha (brewed tea) ceremony. This allows them to appreciate the beauty of the changing seasons through all five senses while enjoying the stunning scenery.
