About YODOKO Guest House
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, it is a milestone work of modernist architecture in the Hanshin area.
Details
YODOKO Geihinkan is the villa of Yamaya Taisaburo, the eighth head of the renowned Japanese sake brewery "Nada Gokyo Shuzo," known for its Sakura Masamune sake. Built in 1924, it is a modern architectural structure. In 1947, it was transferred to the ownership of Yodogawa Steel Works and is now open to the public as "YODOKO Geihinkan."
The architect of this building is Frank Lloyd Wright, a prominent figure in 20th-century modern architecture. His major works are also listed as World Heritage sites. In Japan, he is famous for designing the "Imperial Hotel," but YODOKO Geihinkan is the only residential building he designed in Japan, and it still retains the appearance from the time of its construction. In 1947, it became the first reinforced concrete residential building designated as an important cultural property by the national government after the Taisho era.
Perched on a high point overlooking the city of Ashiya, the building features geometric sculptures, intricate woodwork, and decorative copper plates, all showcasing Wright's architectural philosophy of blending with nature. It is a representative work of the so-called "Hanshin Modernism" culture that emerged in the Hanshin area in the early 20th century.
