🗺️ Yokosuka Port

📝 Introduction

Exuding an exotic charm, it is the harbor of the United States Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

📖 Details

Yokosuka boasts one of Japan's top military ports, established during the Meiji era. Today, both the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and the United States Navy's 7th Fleet maintain bases in Yokosuka, which is also home to the American aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Additionally, Yokosuka serves as the starting and ending point for general long-distance yachts traveling from Yokosuka New Port to Moji Port in Kyushu. Facing the harbor, you can find "Mikasa Park," which preserves the "Mikasa," one of the world's three major memorial ships. There's also "Verny Park," named after the French technicians who contributed to the construction of the former Yokosuka Iron Works, offering a magnificent view of numerous ships floating on the sea. As the Yokosuka area developed alongside the harbor, Dobu Street emerged as a shopping district that reflects its origins. After World War II, souvenir shops, bars, and tailor shops catering to American soldiers sprang up like mushrooms. However, after the Vietnam War, many of these shops dwindled, replaced by clothing stores featuring unique jackets with elaborate Yokosuka embroidery known as "Ryoumen Jacket," military supply stores permitted by the U.S. military, and dining establishments like Yokosuka Navy Curry and Yokosuka Navy Burger, all of which are definitely worth a visit.

⭐ Highlights

The majestic harbor scene with Japanese and American warships floating on the sea. Enjoy the fun of shopping and dining in a shopping street filled with an American atmosphere. Dobu-batomi is named after the early Dobu River that flowed through the center of the road, where residents used thick iron plates provided by the navy as covers. This name has been used since the Taisho era.
