About Yonago Castle Ruins
The most famous castle ruins in the San'in region are the top scenic spot in Yonago.
Details
Yonago Castle was built in the late Sengoku period and is the first modern castle in the San'in region. It is located about 1 kilometer west of Yonago Station, on top of Mount Minato at an elevation of approximately 90 meters, and is also known as "Kume Castle."
During the Edo period, it became a subsidiary castle of the Tottori Domain. It featured a five-story tenshu (main keep) and a four-story yagura (turret), and is well-known for its rare "double tenshu."
Today, only the stone walls and foundation stones remain, but documents and illustrations are well-preserved. In 2006, it was designated as a national historic site, and in 2021, the San-no-maru section of the castle ruins was additionally designated as a historical heritage site. A model and materials of Yonago Castle are displayed at the Yonago City San'in History Museum, which is worth visiting.
The ruins of Yonago Castle are also a very popular hiking route, taking about 15 minutes to walk from the foot of the mountain to the summit. From the well-maintained summit of Minato Mountain Park, you can enjoy a view of the Daisen National Park across from Yonago City, as well as the Shimane Peninsula and Nakai Sea. On clear days, you can even see the Oki Islands. It is also a famous spot for watching sunsets and night views.
