About Yoshimogawa Park
At the ancient battlefield site of the "Dan-no-ura Battle," reflecting on the historic battle.
Details
The ancient battlefield site of the final battle between the Genji and the Heike, known as the "Battle of Dan-no-ura," is now transformed into "Mishogawa Park" around the coastline. In front of the park is the narrowest area of the Kanmon Straits, where the tidal changes are dramatic, allowing visitors to closely observe the ships passing through the straits and the Kanmon Bridge, which connects Honshu and Kyushu and spans a total length of 1,068 meters.
Inside the park, there are statues of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Taira no Tomomori, as well as stone monuments and poetry tablets featuring the death poem recited by Tomomori's mother, Nii no Ama, creating a vivid atmosphere. From 10:00 to 15:00, there are free activities such as Kamishibai (paper theater) that introduce local history in an easy-to-understand manner (there are days when performances are not held, depending on the crowd). Visitors can participate in these activities while contemplating the historical battle that took place in front of the Kanmon Straits.
This location was also the site of a battery that fired upon foreign ships during the late Edo period, featuring life-sized replicas of the Choshu cannons. Five replica gun batteries are lined up facing the straits, with one of them playing cannon firing sounds and smoke effects on the hour from 9:00 to 17:00. For 100 yen, visitors can enjoy this experience at any time.
