Young Master Train / Young Master Train Museum

✨ Highlights

The name of the Shōya Train comes from Natsume Sōseki's novel "Shōya." It uses a tasteless and pollution-free smoke device and steam to recreate the thick smoke of steam locomotives. Without causing environmental pollution, it restores the steam trains of that time. The "Shōya Train Museum" in front of Matsuyama Station displays a full-size model of the original Iyo Railway No. 1 locomotive.

📜 Content

The Shōya Train is modeled after the steam locomotives of the Iyo Railway from its early days. Since its opening in 1888 (Meiji 21), the steam locomotive served as an important means of transportation for the citizens of Matsuyama, running continuously for 67 years within the city. It was named "Shōya Train" because of a scene in Natsume Sōseki's novel "Shōya," where characters ride this train, giving it a charming and familiar appeal. The appearance and interior decoration of the Shōya Train are identical to those of the trains from that era, with the only difference being its power source. Originally powered by steam generated from burning coal, the train would emit thick black smoke while in motion. Although the replica Shōya Train has been converted to a diesel-powered internal combustion engine, it does not compromise on preserving the original details and charm. For example, it uses a smoke device that is odorless and pollution-free, along with water vapor, to recreate the dense smoke of the steam locomotive, allowing people to experience a nostalgic feeling as if they were riding the steam train of the past. By the way, the Shōya Train Museum is located in front of Matsuyama Station. Inside, there is a full-size model of the original Iyo Railway No. 1 locomotive on display. Visitors can closely observe the vehicle's parts and related materials, making it a must-visit spot for railway enthusiasts.
