⛩️ Yuantong Temple

📝 Introduction

The vividly colorful garden is considered one of the most beautiful garden landscapes in the Northeast region.

📖 Details

Enjōin (円通院), established in 1647, is the temple of Date Mitsumune, the grandson of Date Masamune. Enjōin is renowned for its beautiful autumn leaves, with the best viewing period from late October to mid-November. The highlight of the site is the Shinji Pond, built about 350 years ago, and the garden centered around Mount Kannon, which enshrines Kannon Bodhisattva, making it one of the most beautiful landscapes in the Tōhoku region. There are also night lighting events that create a dreamlike atmosphere. Visitors particularly enjoy the experience of making their own personalized Buddhist prayer beads using natural stones and glass. On the left side after entering the mountain gate is the "Ketsuen Kannon," a spot for praying for good relationships in love, academic success, and other aspects of life. Surrounding the Kannon statue are numerous wooden dolls where worshippers write their wishes for good fortune. At the back of the main hall is the Mitsumune Reibyō "San'ei-den," a building constructed using the best architectural techniques of the Date family. It was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1985. The palace-style shrine features paintings of roses, which are said to be cultural patterns brought back from Western countries.
