About Yuki Tsuzuki no Kan (Yuki Tsuzuki Museum)
You can visit, touch, and experience a comprehensive facility where Yuuki Tsumugi is woven using traditional techniques.
Details
The Yuki Tsumugi Museum is a comprehensive facility showcasing the "Yuki Tsumugi," which has been registered as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Within the park, historical materials are introduced in buildings such as traditional houses and warehouses, and visitors can personally experience the charm of the high-quality fabric, Yuki Tsumugi.
The characteristic of Yuki Tsumugi is that it uses hand-spun cotton yarn for both the warp and weft. It originated in the Nara period with the silk fabric "Koshi," offered to the imperial court from the "Hitachi Province." The techniques from that time have been passed down to the present day. With over 40 handcrafted weaving processes, it has been registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and all the history and manufacturing processes are comprehensively introduced in the authentic Yuki Tsumugi dyeing and weaving museum, "Teori."
In the park, there is a long-term exhibition hall displaying over 200 items of Yuki Tsumugi in a traditional house that is over 100 years old. Additionally, in the "Weaving Hall," where visitors can experience the hand-weaving process, it is very interesting to operate a loom known as a "Takki" and create original coasters (2,200 yen, reservation required).
Highlights
The original store "Yui no Mise" sells small gifts made from Yuki Tsumugi that are often used in daily life. The original brand "Yuki Sawaya" offers kimonos, obi, and other items that are closely aligned with modern lifestyles and color tastes, and they are very popular. You can see product displays in the "Exhibition Hall." The facility is managed by "Okajun," a Yuki Tsumugi wholesaler established in the 40th year of the Meiji era (1907). The store is housed in a building from the Taisho era. Please note that only the exterior of the store can be visited; the interior is not open to the public.
