📝 Introduction
One of the three great Tenjin shrines of the Kanto region, deeply revered by the public.
📖 Details
Yushima Tenmangu, located in Yushima, Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo, is one of the three major Tenjin shrines in the Kanto region. Its formal name is "Yushima Tenmangu," but it has been affectionately known as "Yushima Tenjin" since ancient times and is highly revered by the public.
According to legend, in 458 AD, Emperor Yuryaku ordered the construction of the shrine to enshrine "Ame-no-Tajikarao-no-Mikoto," making it a shrine with a very long history. Ame-no-Tajikarao-no-Mikoto is a deity from Japanese mythology known as the god of the earth, associated with strength, victory, and success, especially in sports. Later, in 1355, at the request of the people, the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane was respectfully enshrined here.
Sugawara no Michizane, a noble from the Heian period, was not only a politician but also a well-known scholar and literary figure. Due to his accomplishments during his lifetime, he is revered as the god of learning and is held in high esteem. Yushima Tenmangu, with the blessings of Ame-no-Tajikarao-no-Mikoto for "victory and strength," as well as the "academic achievements" associated with Sugawara no Michizane, has become one of the most popular spiritual spots in Tokyo.
Since the Edo period, Yushima Tenmangu has been a famous plum blossom viewing spot. The best time to enjoy the blooms is around early February, when the "Ume Matsuri," part of the "Bunkyo Hanano Godai Matsuri," is held. During the festival, numerous stalls and activities take place, and beautiful lights are lit in the evening, making it a delightful seasonal tradition in early spring in Tokyo.
