🗺️ Zao Juhyo (Yamagata Prefecture)

📝 Introduction

Known as the "Yeti," this unique landscape in the world is breathtaking.

📖 Details

Zao in Yamagata Prefecture is the largest mountain resort in the Tohoku region. In winter, it becomes a paradise for winter sports, attracting many visitors who come to admire the "frosted trees" created by snow and ice accumulating on the branches and leaves. The so-called frost-covered trees are formed by the large Abies mariesii (Japanese: 大白葉冷杉) that grow near Zao, where ice and snow repeatedly accumulate on the leaves and branches. This phenomenon can only occur under specific conditions of temperature, wind direction, and snowfall, making it a rare sight found only in certain mountainous areas of the Ou Mountains. With their beautiful yet monstrous appearance, they are often referred to as "snow monsters." The best time to appreciate the frost-covered trees is from late December to early March, with the most spectacular period occurring from late January to mid-February. The area from the mid-station of the Zao Ropeway to the "Jizōsan Summit" station is the best spot to view the vast frost-covered tree fields. Riding the ropeway allows visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of the frost-covered trees from above. Near the Jizōsan Summit station, one can experience the stunning scenery up close. Additionally, there is a mountaintop terrace offering a 360° panoramic view and a restaurant where visitors can enjoy the scenery indoors. There is also the unique experience of skiing past the frost-covered trees, whether on twin boards or a snowboard. Nearby, the Zao Ropeway, designated as a "Lovers' Sanctuary," and the natural hot spring "Zao Onsen," known for its flowing source, are also quite famous, making winter tourism in Zao a delightful experience to savor.
