About Zao Onsen
The ancient hot spring with a history of 1900 years represents the hot spring area of Yamagata Prefecture.
Details
Zao Onsen is said to have opened its natural hot springs in the year 110 AD. The strongly acidic sulfur spring has antibacterial properties and improves skin quality, earning it the nickname "Beauty Bath." Zao Onsen boasts 47 sources, with an impressive output of 8,700 tons of hot spring water per day. The hot spring street features three public baths, four foot baths, and five hot spring facilities for day-use.
Among these, the Zao Onsen large open-air bath with flowing spring water is the most popular attraction. Visitors can listen to the sound of flowing water while soaking in the sulfur-scented, milky white hot spring. As there are no regular bathing facilities for rinsing, it is recommended to wash off any dirt at the washing area before entering the bath. Please note that it is closed in winter.
The Zao area is a renowned ski resort, praised by travelers for its abundant and high-quality powder snow, attracting many international tourists. The ice and snow-covered forests that form ice trees are also a famous sight. From spring to autumn, it is a popular hiking destination, allowing visitors to enjoy a forest bath followed by a soak, refreshing both body and mind.
Highlights
The hot spring town has many shops filled with a warm wooden atmosphere. There are several bathing facilities and foot baths available for day trips, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the hot springs. The Zao Onsen large outdoor bath can accommodate up to 200 people at the same time. During the snow season, many travelers come for skiing or the beautiful scenery of ice-covered trees.
