About Aizu Bukeyashiki
A museum filled with the history of Aizu.
Details
The Aizu Bukeyashiki is located near "Higashiyama Onsen" and has restored the "Saigo Takamori's Residence," which was the home of the Aizu clan's chief retainer. Along with surrounding relocated traditional buildings and museums, it forms a large-scale historical museum park.
Saigo Takamori's residence is a magnificent wooden samurai house that includes 38 buildings, such as the "Onarino-ma," used for receiving the clan lord, and the "Okuichino-ma," which served as the chief retainer's bedroom. There are also three-dimensional models with dolls that recreate daily life and historical scenes from that time, allowing visitors to see the living conditions of the era. One particularly poignant display depicts the scene of wives committing suicide during the Battle of Aizu, which is sure to bring tears to one's eyes.
In addition, there are many relocated historical buildings designated as important cultural properties, such as the old Nakabata Jin'ya, a silkworm farming house, and a rice milling machine powered by a waterwheel. Part of the warehouse is also used as a historical materials exhibition hall. Activities such as glass engraving, DIY Aizu folk toy red cow, archery experiences, and riddle cards are also quite enjoyable. There are also local cuisine restaurants and shops selling traditional handicrafts.
Highlights
You can visit the restored Aizu Clan Chief's Residence. You can experience the coloring of local Aizu toys, such as the Akabeko (red cow) and Fukusuke (tumbling doll). There is also a restaurant where you can taste local cuisine.
