About Ancient Eastern Museum

The exhibition showcases artifacts unearthed from archaeological investigations, and it is Japan's first museum dedicated to ancient Eastern cultures.

Details

The Sunshine City Cultural Center, located next to Ikebukuro Sunshine City, is Japan's first museum dedicated to the theme of ancient Eastern civilizations. It was established for the purpose of research, data collection, preservation, and exhibition related to ancient Eastern studies. The museum houses and displays approximately 5,000 items primarily from the regions of West Asia and Egypt, known as the "cradle of civilization," as well as many artifacts unearthed during academic investigations in Syria. The "Collection Exhibition" (permanent exhibition) showcases artifacts with themes such as "The Earliest Ancient East" and "Syrian Excavations." Through a rich variety of categories including tools, crafts, and artworks, it introduces the history from the Paleolithic era to the Sasanian Empire (3rd to 7th centuries). In addition to the collection exhibition, there are also special themed exhibitions and biannual special exhibitions featuring items from outside the museum. During the summer vacation period, a hands-on experience area allows children to create ancient Egyptian amulets or write messages using ancient seals, which is quite popular among kids. The museum shop offers a wide range of original products designed based on unearthed artifacts or ancient Egyptian gods, hieroglyphs, and more.
