About Asakusa Nakamise Shopping Street
Crowded with worshippers heading to Senso-ji Temple, it is one of Japan's oldest shopping streets.
Details
Asakusa Nakamise Shopping Street is the approach to Senso-ji Temple, stretching 250 meters from the temple's main gate, "Kaminarimon," to "Hozomon." Along this stone-paved path, there are many dining establishments and souvenir shops.
The history of Nakamise is quite long, believed to have begun during the Genroku to Kyoho periods (1688-1735), and it is widely recognized as one of Japan's oldest shopping streets.
In addition to long-established shops selling "Ningyo-yaki" (人形焼) and "Kaminari Okoshi" (雷おこし), there are also stores offering traditional crafts that make perfect souvenirs. It is important to note that although there are many dining options on Nakamise, eating while walking is not permitted, so if you purchase snacks or food, please consume them nearby or move to another location.
After the shops close at night, visitors can see the "Asakusa Corridor Mural," completed in 1989, which is also a major highlight. The mural, stretching 400 meters from east to west, offers a glimpse into Asakusa's proud and rich history.
Highlights
One of the oldest shopping streets in Japan, the Nakamise Shopping Street extends from the Kaminarimon Gate of Senso-ji Temple to the Hozomon Gate. It features about 90 various shops selling famous sweets, kimono accessories, and well-known delicacies, all lined up closely together. Please note that eating while walking is not allowed; you should move to another location to eat. After nightfall, you can also see the "Asakusa Corridor Mural," which depicts the history of Asakusa.
