Bessho Onsen is a hot spring resort with a long history of 1,400 years. Surrounded by many shrines and temples, it has been known since ancient times as "Kamakura of Shinshu" and is beloved by the people of Nagano Prefecture. Bessho Onsen is famous for its beauty-enhancing waters and was mentioned in the renowned Japanese essay collection "Makura no Soshi." In the past, there was a custom where brides would specifically visit this hot spring before their weddings. The hot spring town features five elegantly styled public baths and foot baths, allowing visitors to enjoy the pleasure of strolling and exploring the hot springs in a retro atmosphere.
There are many precious temples and shrines around Bessho Onsen, all within walking distance. Among them are "Zenkoji" (Nagano City), facing south, and "Kitamuki Kannon-do," facing north. It is said that visiting both temples together can double one's good fortune. Other notable sites include "Joraku-ji," which thrived as a Tendai mathematical training hall during the Kamakura period, "Kencho-ji" in Kamakura, and "Anraku-ji," one of the oldest Rinzai Zen temples in Japan. Recently, the pilgrimage of collecting stamps from various temples and shrines has also become quite popular. Additionally, "Bessho Shrine," located on a high platform, is a popular energy spot for love blessings.
Within the hot spring town, there are more than ten ryokans (traditional inns) with various styles, each with fewer than 40 rooms, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere without noise. From ryokans featuring scenic open-air baths to those known for their cuisine, there are options to meet the diverse needs of travelers.
