About Big Step Danger and Small Step Danger

Walking quickly is dangerous, and walking slowly is also very dangerous? You can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the valley up close and experience the hidden dangers of the rapids.

Details

Ōboke and Koboke are a grand canyon formed by the erosion of the Yoshino River, which has carved through the mountains of Shikoku over the past 200 million years. The canyon stretches approximately 8 kilometers and is renowned for its breathtaking rock formations that resemble marble sculptures. It has been designated as a national natural monument due to its proximity to stunning rock views and the V-shaped canyon landscape. This area is also a valuable site for studying the evolution of the Japanese archipelago. Since ancient times, it has been known as a famous spot where "walking fast is dangerous, and walking slowly is also dangerous." There are many ways to experience the unique charm of Ōboke and Koboke. For example, you can take the "Ōboke Gorge Sightseeing Boat," where experienced boatmen guide you to appreciate the scenic beauty of the gorge up close; or you can join a "rafting" tour to experience the thrill of riding a rubber boat downstream amidst stunning scenery and enjoy the splashes of water. Additionally, this region has long been associated with many yokai legends and has been recognized by the World Yokai Association as "Yokai Heritage." Within the Ōboke tourist area, there is a "Yokai Mansion" that showcases various yokai from local folklore and hosts various events such as the "Yokai Festival." Nearby, you can also visit the Iya Onsen hot spring village and the "Iya Vine Bridge." The vine bridge is known as one of Japan's three great unusual bridges, and walking on the suspension bridge woven from vines is a heart-pounding experience that further enhances the thrill of Ōboke and Koboke.

Highlights

I recommend taking the "Oboke Gorge Sightseeing Cruise" to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the valley up close. Oboke and Koboke, known as Japan's top rapids, are among the world's few sacred places for white-water rafting. Within the Oboke area, there is a "Yokai Mansion" that showcases various yokai from local folklore. It is also suggested to visit the Oboke Iya Onsen area and the "Iya Kazurabashi," one of Japan's three great suspension bridges.
