About British Embassy Villa Memorial Park
Experience the rich natural scenery and historical beauty of the park by the shores of Chūzan-ji Lake.
Details
You can enjoy a view of the serene Chūzanji Lake, where the tranquil waters reflect the beautiful scenery interwoven with lush mountains and forests. The climate around Chūzanji Lake is cool, and the natural landscape is rich. From the mid-Meiji period to the early Shōwa period, various embassies and foreigners built villas here, making Chūzanji Lake a popular international summer retreat.
The park's iconic building is the private villa of the British diplomat Sir Ernest Satow, who had a significant impact on the Meiji Restoration. It was built in the 29th year of the Meiji era (1896). Later, it served as the British Embassy villa until it was transferred to Tochigi Prefecture in 2008.
Inside, the villa introduces the history of Chūzanji Lake and the British culture of that time. From the second-floor corridor, you can see the "picturesque scenery" of Chūzanji Lake, which was Sir Satow's favorite view. In the second-floor tea room "Nan 4-ban Classic," you can enjoy a traditional scone and tea set supervised by the chef of the British Embassy in Japan.
Highlights
Standing by the shores of Lake Chuzenji, the park offers breathtaking views. The buildings within the park were originally the villa of British diplomat Sir John Sadoff. The traditional scones and tea set in the tea room are also very popular.
