About Hakodate City Seikan Ferry Memorial Museum Mashu Maru

Visit the museum ship "Mashu Maru," which has been transformed from a maritime Shinkansen, and enjoy the atmosphere of the captain.

Details

The early connection ferry for the Aomori-Hakodate route, known as the "Shin-Kansen on the Sea," is the Tsugaru Maru-type ferry "Masyu Maru 2nd Generation," which has been converted into a museum ship. After ceasing operations in 1988, it was transformed into an exhibition ship and reopened as a memorial ship for public visits. Later, in 2003, it held a reopening ceremony after the renovation, becoming the current "Hakodate City Aomori-Hakodate Connection Ferry Memorial Museum Masyu Maru." Inside the ship, visitors can explore the bridge and the wireless communication room as they were during its operational days. Guests can actually touch the ship's wheel and various navigation equipment, allowing them to experience the feeling of becoming a captain. Additionally, in the wireless communication room, visitors can try typing in Morse code. Many families specifically visit this museum for the various experiential activities it offers. In the exhibition room converted from the green cabin at the front, actual components and models can be seen; screens and videos provide insights into the history and structure of the Aomori-Hakodate connection ferry. Between 10 AM and 3 PM, retired crew members serve as volunteer guides on board. If questions are raised, the volunteers will provide detailed explanations about the ship's history and operation.
