About Hidashima (Flying Island)
The vast natural environment is the only inhabited island in Yamagata Prefecture.
Details
Tobishima is located 39 kilometers northwest of Sakata City in Yamagata Prefecture, in the Sea of Japan, and is the only offshore island in Yamagata Prefecture. The entire island is a designated national park (Chokai National Park), preserving untouched nature. One of the highlights is the Tobishima daylilies, which bloom around June. These vibrant yellow flowers can only be found in Tobishima, certain areas of Sakata City, and specific regions of Sado Island. Additionally, the area is popular for birdwatching and serves as a stopover for migratory birds, making it highly likely to see rare bird species.
Tobishima is not only rich in various fish species but is also renowned as a famous fishing spot for catching large fish. It attracts fishing enthusiasts from both within and outside the prefecture. There are guesthouses that offer fishing rod rentals, and you can enjoy fresh fish meals caught from the waves of the Sea of Japan, making it a worthwhile visit.
There is a regular ferry service from Sakata Port to Tobishima with one round trip per day, making it convenient for same-day sightseeing. The island has several inns and guesthouses (please inquire by phone in advance), allowing visitors to fully enjoy a leisurely Tobishima holiday.
