🗺️ Hirado Dutch Trading Post

📝 Introduction

The history and culture of Hirado as a trading hub in East Asia.

📖 Details

The Hirado Dutch Trading Post was established in 1609 and once served as a trading hub in East Asia, actively engaging in foreign exchanges for about 30 years. Although it was a strong symbol of Nagasaki trade, its presence was significant, all buildings were destroyed under the Christian prohibition during the Edo period, leaving only ruins behind. After four centuries, the historical site's importance in Hirado's history and culture has been continuously recognized, leading to architectural restoration and environmental improvements. Today, the warehouse with pure white walls and a tiled roof has been faithfully restored, and the "Matsuura Historical Museum" has been established within it. The museum showcases a variety of collections, including paintings and books. Among them, the Nanban lacquerware, which was one of the main export goods to Europe, and the rich historical materials related to trade are particularly attractive. Visitors can also explore special exhibitions held several times a year and browse the museum shop selling original products.
