About Hiroshima Branch of the Mint Bureau

A precious limited-time open visit allows you to see the rare Yaezakura variety.

Details

The Hiroshima Branch of the Japan Mint has up to 60 varieties of 210 cherry blossom trees, including popular varieties as well as rare ones that are not commonly seen. The branch is generally not open to the public except for a one-week period each year from early to mid-April, when it opens for the "Sakura Kaido" event in conjunction with the cherry blossoms blooming. Since the local area primarily features late-blooming Yaezakura, visitors can still enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms even after the peak bloom period of most Somei Yoshino spots. In 1967 (Showa 42), cherry blossoms transplanted from the main Osaka Mint, famous for its "Sakura Tunnel," bloomed two years after being planted here, delighting the staff. In 1991 (Heisei 3), to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Mint's establishment, it began allowing public visits. Today, it has become a beloved spring tradition for the citizens of Hiroshima. There is no parking available at the Mint or in the surrounding area, so please use public transportation when visiting. During the open visitation period, a temporary shuttle bus (for a fee) operates from the north exit of Goichida Station.
