About Hokkaido Historical Village
An outdoor museum showcasing architecture from the Meiji to Showa periods, taking you on a journey through time back to the pioneering era of Hokkaido!
Details
Located in the vast and nature-filled Yabukiri Forest Park, this outdoor museum gathers various buildings from the Hokkaido pioneering period, spanning from the Meiji to early Showa eras. After restoration and reconstruction, these structures are presented to the public once again.
Covering an area of 54.2 hectares, the site is divided into four zones: urban area, fishing village, farming village, and mountain village, featuring a total of 52 buildings. Not only the exteriors but also the interior furniture and arrangements recreate the atmosphere of that time, making visitors feel as if they have returned to the pioneering days of Hokkaido. In the summer, a horse-drawn railway runs from the urban area to the farming village; during winter weekends, national holidays, and the "Sapporo Snow Festival," visitors can enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides. Amidst the nostalgic atmosphere, one can leisurely stroll through the retro streets.
The experience learning building offers various hands-on activities related to architecture, such as traditional toy making, dyeing workshops, and a newspaper office, which are highly praised. If you get hungry, you can head to the restaurant to savor Hokkaido specialties like "potato pancakes" and "herring soba."
