Hozenji Yokocho, located within the precincts of the Pure Land sect's Hozenji Temple, consists of two narrow alleys paved with cobblestones. Since the Meiji era (1868-1912), it has been a famous tourist attraction in Japan, drawing numerous visitors from all over the country. Initially, there were only a few stalls catering to worshippers, but it gradually developed into a bustling shopping street filled with shops. Although it suffered significant damage from surrounding fires and air raids during the Pacific War, it has been revitalized through the collective efforts of the local community.
Hozenji Yokocho extends about 80 meters long and 3 meters wide in two alleys running east to west. Despite being located right next to the bustling and vibrant Dotonbori, it offers a tranquil atmosphere filled with nostalgia. Especially on rainy days, the wet stone pavement creates a refreshing and elegant ambiance. Lining both sides of the alley are various shops, including long-established Japanese restaurants, okonomiyaki shops, yakitori izakayas, and small bars.
On the west side of Hozenji Yokocho stands a statue of "Mizukake Fudo Myo-o." Throughout the day, you can see worshippers with their hands clasped in prayer facing the statue, and the air is always filled with the scent of incense. As worshippers pour clean water over the Fudo Myo-o while praying, over time, the statue has become covered in moss.
Hozenji Yokocho has also served as the backdrop for many novels, films, and songs in Japan. Among the most famous are Oda Sakunosuke's novel "Fufu Zenya" and the song "Tsuki no Hozenji Yokocho."
