In Niimi City, Okayama Prefecture, there are over 200 limestone caves of various sizes, with the Iwakura Cave being the largest among them. This giant limestone cave, designated as a natural monument of Okayama, stretches 1,200 meters in length and has a height difference of 90 meters. Entering through the entrance located on a cliff about 240 meters high beside the Takahashi River, visitors are greeted by a mysterious world sculpted by nature over billions of years.
Inside the cave, there are more than 30 unique rock formations, including "Silver Curtain," "Water Clothes," and "Jellyfish Rock." The "Icicle Stone" hanging from the ceiling and the "Stone Pillars" that rise from the ground like bamboo shoots are also worth seeing.
Additionally, there are three waterfalls within the cave, with the "Earth Axis Waterfall," which has a height difference of about 50 meters, being the most spectacular. The roaring sound of the water cascading down allows visitors to witness the greatness of nature firsthand. Near the exit, there is the "Arizono Shrine," famous for the deity of relationships.
There are also dining establishments offering the famous "Chiya Beef" from Niimi, as well as shops selling local sake and snacks, making it advisable to stop by for a meal or to purchase souvenirs.
