About Imperial Theatre
The holy land of musicals that leads the Japanese theater scene.
Details
Due to reconstruction work, the theater will be closed (scheduled to reopen in 2030).
The 帝国劇場 (Teikoku Gekijō) is a private theater that was completed in March 1911 (Meiji 44). It was constructed under the leadership of prominent entrepreneurs and business leaders from the late Meiji era, making it Japan's first Western-style theater. Known affectionately as "帝劇" (Teigeki), it is famous for being the first theater in Japan to stage works primarily themed around "musicals." It underwent a major renovation in 1966 (Shōwa 41) and still retains its elegant appearance today. Here, you can enjoy spectacular performances made possible by the latest stage equipment.
In addition to the musical "Les Misérables," which premiered in 1987 (Shōwa 56) and continues to be performed repeatedly, the theater actively presents many new works. Besides watching performances, the lobby features stained glass and light decorations created by the renowned artist Inokuma Gen'ichirō from the Shōwa era, providing a design that immerses visitors in an extraordinary atmosphere. The souvenir shop inside offers a variety of original products suitable as mementos, including pens and chocolates made by Bic.
